Here, we show that the most likely interpretation consistent with this approach (i.e., with the dynamic method together with a level-of-no-motion assumption and Ekman dynam-5 ics), is that any decrease in strength of the deep western boundary current must have been compensated, not by a basin-wide increase in upper layer southward flow, but by changes in the nonlinear region, immediately outside of the Florida Straits.

Reconstructing the Meridional Overturning Circulation from Boundary Densities and the Zonal Wind Stress

Numerical models are used to test whether the meridional overturning circulation (MOC) can be reconstructed from boundary densities and the wind stress. In idealized model setups without topography the strength as well as the temporal and spatial variability of the MOC cell can largely be reproduced from boundary densities and the zonal wind stress. With added slopes along the meridional bounda...

The Zonal Dimension of the Indian Ocean Meridional Overturning Circulation

The three-dimensional structure of the meridional overturning circulation (MOC) in the deep Indian Ocean is investigated with an eddy-permitting ocean model. The amplitude of the modeled deep Indian Ocean MOC is 5.6 Sv (1 Sv 10 m s ), a broadly realistic but somewhat weak overturning. Although the model parameterization of diapycnal mixing is inaccurate, the model’s short spinup allows the effe...

Timely Detection of Changes in the Meridional Overturning Circulation at 26°N in the Atlantic

It is investigated how changes in the North Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (MOC) might be reliably detected within a few decades, using the observations provided by the RAPID-MOC 26°N array. Previously, detectability of MOC changes had been investigated with a univariate MOC time series exhibiting strong internal variability, which would prohibit the detection of MOC changes within...

Measuring oxygen concentrations to improve the detection capabilities of an ocean circulation observation array

[1] The North Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (MOC) may weaken or even collapse in response to anthropogenic climate forcing, with potentially nontrivial socioeconomic impacts. One currently implemented MOC observation system uses temperature and salinity (as well as other) observations along a zonal transect in the North Atlantic. The resulting MOC estimate has, however, a relative...

Variability, instabilities and eddies in a Snowball ocean

An ocean covered by (∼1 km) thick ice, motivated by Snowball Earth conditions and driven by a very weak geothermal heat flux, is shown to be characterized by an energetic turbulent eddy field, zonal jets that propagate towards the equator and a strongly variable meridional overturning circulation (MOC). There are two main opposite-sign zonal jets around the equator that are not eddy driven, tog...
